Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
