The Video Platform Offers Users Control to Limit AI-Generated Media in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a fresh option that permits them to lessen the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service disclosed that it presently contains over 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a widespread launch. This shift coincides with a surge in content created by AI, spurred by recent video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform exclusively feature content made by AI. A significant portion of this content is deemed low-quality AI content, a phrase for inferior, factory-style content that is typically absurd or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, including AI artwork to educational videos, and we aim to give people the ability to increase or decrease of that, according to their own choices,” said a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The service disclosed that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its service identified as made with AI. Overall, over 100 million pieces of content are submitted to the app each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small percentage of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be in a position to limit or boost the amount of artificial media they see by using the content preference feature in the app and picking AI-made media. Further subjects that currently be controlled under the filter include news, fashion, beauty, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

TikTok’s guidelines require users to label lifelike AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous fake videos of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any believable AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the platform will henceforth attach an artificially created tag to content produced via its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This action is aimed to help prevent users from seeking to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is also launching a $2m awareness program for experts and groups to produce learning resources about ethical AI use. This program will support charitable organizations specializing in training programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has defended its moderation strategy, amid controversy over proposals to make redundant a large number of content moderators in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to reduce 439 jobs in its trust and safety department in the UK capital, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead clarified that human moderation would still have a role, but automated tools can shield workers by filtering out the most graphic content before it is viewed by people. The company announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate people and machines to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to harmful content as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
